Trap size

This is my first post in the trapping forum, I have done quite abit of trapping in Montana with a buddy when he lived there, caught quite a few critters over there and was hooked..I don't have my trappers license yet but plan on getting it for next season, anyways I've started ordering a few cages already and reading a lot on here and I'm getting excited, is a 12x12x36 cage to small for cats? Also I'm interested in buying some cages and any other supply's I may need if anyone has some they are looking to sell.. thanks!

12x12 is to small for cats IMO. I'm sure you will be able to find a picture of one crammed in that size but I would suggest something taller. Narrow is OK but look for something near 18" high.
If you are not planning on trapping this year I would suggest you go to the Rendezvous. There will be traps there and you can look them over. Always nice to look them over before you buy your first.
For cats I make 10x18s for cats and am refitting to make 11x17s.
I would also suggest if you buy the right traps you can use them as swim throughs or for cat traps, multipurpose. You should be able to see several different brands at the Rendezvous.

My first season was last year. I did catch one cat in a 11.5x12.5x36" china trap. Did not expect to see him in there. I made 3 traps 15x18x48 for cat and had one 10 yards above the skunk trap. Well the cat must of like the food in the little trap better. Lol This season I used Jesses traps as well as my traps. They caught me 3 cats so far. They do work great and Like Bruce try and kill two bird with one stone.  I was thinking the same thing. Making a swin thru trap 12x18x36 witch works as a double door swim thru or a single/double door cat trap. Hmmm must look in to that. But in the mean time and you need a good trap call Jesse. His traps are 12x18x36 and work great. Well good luck this season.

Thank you guys for the responses! I'm really looking forward to getting my license for next season, caught  plenty of critters in footholds and conibears from marten to beaver in Montana, but never cage trapped, I've already got the ball rolling and have ordered a dz cages of various sizes already, I'm looking forward to going to the rendezvous this year for the first time and seeing every thing and learning some stuff!! I'll definitely be in the market for traps when I'm there!!

Me personally I like certain traps for specific animals except beaver and otter they both get caught in the same swim through cages but
 Cats 12"W x 18"T x 42L is my go to
Marten 6"W x 6"T x 24"L
 Beaver and otter 12"W x 12"T x48"L I prefer long swim through cages
Muskrat 7"W x7"T x 24"L
